Platelet, Apheresis
Test Name: | Platelet Concentrate
Epic Order Code: | Orderable by requisition only. State number of apheresis united needed (equivalent to approximately 6 pooled single platelets) on requisition.
CPT Code: | 86965 | ||
Specimen(s) Type: | Whole blood, 5.0 mL; not required if patient's blood type has been tested in the past year
Acceptable Container(s): | Top is purple (lavender).
Testing Schedule: | 24 hours/day, 7 days/week
Turn Around Time: | STAT: 1-2 hours (depending on availability of platelet concentrates)
Routine: 6 hours | |||
Collection Information: | A platelet count should be done before platelets are ordered and must be recorded on the Requisition Form. A one hour post transfusion platelet count is recommended. ABO/Rh is required. Obtain by standard collection procedures.
Transport Information: | Deliver to lab immediately. All specimens must be signed into the laboratory.
Reference Clients: | If unable to deliver to the lab immediately, store and transport specimen at 2-8° C. Specimen must be received in the lab within 48 hours. All specimens drawn as outpatients will be for informational purposes only - not for transfusion.
Causes for Rejection: | Improperly labeled, incorrect container, contaminated, insufficient quantity, incorrect/delay in transport, grossly hemolyzed, failure to provide a properly completed Requisition Form and/or a Blood Infusion form.
Reference Range: | NA | ||
Additional Information: | One single apheresis donor platelet is equivalent to approximately six multiple donor platelet concentrates.
Indications for Use: Treatment of patients with thrombocytopenia or functionally abnormal platelets. Multiple donor platelet concentrates usually contain 5.5 x 10 10 platelets. Each unit of multiple donor platelets would be expected to increase the platelet count of a hematologically stable adult (70 Kg) about 5-10,000. A single donor apheresis platelet concentrate usually contains 3x10 11 platelets and would be expected to increase the platelet count of a hematologically stable 70kg adult by approximately 60,000. Chills, fever and allergic reactions may occur. Repeated platelet transfusion may lead to a refractory state in which the patient responds only to HLA matched platelets that must be obtained by special arrangements. |
